02137 Phosphate Coated Zinc Plating- An Alternative To Cadmium Plating on Fasteners

Alternatives to cadmium plating on fasteners have been evaluated for a number of years. Torque-tension and corrosion resistance characteristics have been the major concerns. Zinc plating has been a popular substitute, but torque-tension at proper preloads on Grade 8 fasteners requires more torque.  Torque-tension tests were ALSO evaluated on Grade 5 fasteners - same coatings.

Alternatives to cadmium plating on fasteners have been evaluated for a number of years. Torque-tension and corrosion resistance characteristics have been the major concerns. Zinc plating has been a popular substitute, but torque-tension at proper preloads on Grade 8 fasteners requires approximately 33 percent more torque. Zinc plating with a supplemental phosphate coating in lieu of the typical supplemental chromate coating was evaluated as an alternative to cadmium plating. Torque-tension and salt spray corrosion resistances were determined for Grade 8 fasteners. Torque-tension tests were also evaluated on Grade 5 fasteners with the same coatings. Finally, torque-tension tests were conducted on the different finishes using an automotive lubricant. The results of the tests are presented in the paper.

Key Words: Fastener coatings, cadmium plating, zinc plating, phosphate coating, chromate conversion coating, salt spray (ASTM-B 117) corrosion testing, torque-tension, cadmium plating alternative.
