51317--9635-Chemical and Electrical Stability of Reference Electrodes in Sand Bed Dosed with Volatile Corrosion

This work evaluated chemical and electrical stability of commercially reference electrodes in contact with sand treated with vapor-phase corrosion inhibitors (VCIs). Several types of electrodes were tested, including Cu/CuSO4, bentonite-clay clad Cu/CuSO4, and bentonite-clay clad Zn/ZnSO4.

Various types of reference cells including Copper-Copper Sulfate (Cu/CuSO4) are widely used to monitor the structure to electrolyte potential of above-ground storage tank bottoms. Specifically the reference electrodes are used to measure native “ON” and “OFF” potentials. Reference electrodes intended for long-term monitoring are placed under the tank bottom and cannot practically be retrieved or replaced. Dependability of the reference electrodes is therefore of paramount importance since electrical and chemical instabilities would lead to erroneous potential measurements and contamination respectively. A preliminary study of the effect a volatile corrosion inhibitor (VCIs) containing environment has on electrode stability has suggested that the reference cells could be influenced from VCI exposure. This work was conducted to diligently evaluate chemical and electrical stability of commercially available reference electrodes in contact with sand treated with VCIs. Several types of commercially available reference electrodes were tested including Cu/CuSO4 and bentonite-clad zinc (Zn) cell types. The testing was conducted using two-electrode corrosion cells with either a Cu/CuSO4 reference cell or bentonite clad Zn working electrode in conjunction with a saturated calomel reference electrode serving as the counter electrode. The corrosion cell was connected to a data logger and the potential of the working electrode with respect to the saturated calomel reference electrode was monitored for 3 months. This paper will provide details of the experimental work conducted to understand the chemical and electrical stability of the reference electrodes in contact with VCIs.
