51316-7173-Development of Carbon Steel for Pipe Resistant to Stress Corrosion Cracking in Fuel Grade Ethanol

It is known that carbon steels in Fuel Grade Ethanol (FGE) has pitting corrosion and active path corrosion-type stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility.  In the current work, susceptibility of pitting and SCC of two types of X52 grade carbon steel were investigated by immersion testing and Slow Strain Rate Testing (SSRT).

Concerns about pitting and SCC of carbon steel in FGE are major issues about pipeline for FGE-transportations. Although earlier studies have revealed environment factor on pitting corrosion and SCC in FGE there is little understanding of the powerful influence of steel factors on pitting and SCC in FGE. In the current work susceptibility of pitting and SCC of two types of X52 grade carbon steel were investigated by immersion testing and Slow Strain Rate Testing (SSRT). One is the conventional steel and the other is low alloy designed steel to improve the resistance for anodic dissolution in FGE environment. Alloy designed steel showed low susceptibility for pitting and SCC compared with conventional steel. This result was supported by additional electrochemical measurements?such as anodic polarization curves measurement and scratch test. It can be considered that alloy element oxides formed at anodic dissolution site suppress further anodic dissolution on site.
