The separation of anodic and cathodic areas during atmospheric corrosion is governed by the distribution of the surface potential. Corrosion under atmospheric conditions starts after deposition of aerosols at the metal surface. The corroding location interacts with the surrounding passive surface forming a galvanic cell. For metals such as zinc, copper, and iron, the cathodic area spreads from the contamination. The area and the efficiency of the oxygen reduction as well as the surface ionic conductivity determine the corrosion rate.
