Cathodic protection systems for reinforced concrete structures frequently employ arrays of embedded anodes (e.g. ribbons mesh probes etc.) that are arranged with the objective of providing uniform current distribution to the reinforcing steel. Insufficient consideration of the attenuation characteristics of the anode array interconnections can lead to large differentials in the maximum & minimum current density provided at different points in the array as well as over-stated current requirements.Similarly insufficient consideration of return current paths through the reinforcing steel’s metallic path can lead to current imbalances in structure return cables. These imbalances can result in highly concentrated currents through reinforcing steel tie-wire connections and return currents that exceed cable ratings.This paper presents examples of anode array arrangements and corresponding attenuation characteristic calculations to enable optimization of current distribution; and presents examples of return current imbalances and how they may be corrected.
