51318-11152-Risk Based Subsea Inspection Planning and Corrosion Management.

A new field gradient (FG) measurement tool has been developed for cathodic protection (CP) inspection of subsea facilities. The paper presents a case where FG data and CP modelling have been used to optimize CP retrofit design, cutting costs by 50%.

Based on more than 20 years’ experience within corrosion management, a new field gradient (FG) measurement tool has been developed to revolutionize CP inspection of subsea facilities. The oil and gas operators are moving from periodic subsea inspections to risk based inspection intervals. FG data combined with in-house CP modelling software provide the operators with status and life expectancy of the CP systems. The risk based approach to subsea inspection planning, combined with the new FG and in-house expertise within the field of corrosion and integrity management, provide the operators full overview of the integrity of their subsea fields. The gain for the operators is the status and confidence needed to make qualified and cost-effective decisions and to be ahead of unforeseen scenarios in the operational phase.

The paper presents a recent case where FG data and CP modelling have been used to perform an optimized CP retrofit design, cutting the retrofit costs with 50%. The experience from the FG survey and post processing of the data are valuable as input for optimization of future Risk Based Inspection (RBI) planning and integrity management of the pipeline system.

Key words: Field gradient measurements, subsea, pipeline, risk based inspection, integrity management.
