Aluminium alloy sacrificial anodes are often used to protect marine structures due to their high electrochemical properties. Anodes are often immersed in seawater when the tank is ballasted and dry with the tank empty. We study the properties of an Al-Zn-In-Cd alloy anode with cyclic immersion in seawater in the laboratory.
Experience has shown that stainless steels can suffer from Hydrogen Induced Stress Cracking (HISC) under cathodic protection in seawater. This paper presents results from a test program examining the HISC susceptibility of 25% Cr super duplex stainless steel (UNS S32750) at temperatures up to 1500C.
Evaluation of metal-based structures has relied on atmospheric exposure test sites to determine corrosion resistance in marine environments. This work uses surface chemistry and electrochemical techniques to interpret the chemical changes occurring on low carbon and stainless steel during atmospheric and accelerated corrosion conditions to find a correlation between its accelerated and long-term corrosion performance.
Mg alloy in the solid monolith form has been investigated as a promising orthopedic implant. After 12 weeks of implantation (rabbits), significant bony tissue growth was observed both inside and outside the implants. These suggest the coated Mg alloy might be useful as a promising scaffold for bone repair and regeneration.
The geomagnetic field fluctuations are accompanied by the geo-electric (telluric) field and telluric currents at the surface of the Earth and in the pipelines. These telluric activity indices were calculated for two areas in low latitude (Ottawa) and Alaska. Levels of telluric activity and rate of occurrences were calculated.
Initial investigations described at Corrosion 2011. This paper reports on development of a micelle detection instrument. Criteria for interpreting the presence of micelles will be reported and results of a simulated field study to investigate the link between inhibitor micelle presence and corrosion rate. Together with results from real field samples, this data will be presented as development of a new tool for field analysis of brines
In the beginning corrosion textbooks were consistant with describing the eight forms of metallic corrosion. Since the definition of corrosion has been changed to incorporate the deterioration of non-metallic materials it is time to assess if the eight forms are still applicable. This paper describes how the eight forms of corrosion can apply to non-metallic materials.
An unexpected explosion occurred in the vent line connecting at the top of a titanium reactor that was used to make a fire-retardant fabric. In this presentation the cause for this accident will be discussed based on the findings in examining samples from the vent line and the results of high-temperature tests.
