Steel tanks and enclosures in Navy ships are protected by a combination of coatings and cathodic protection (CP) systems. Tanks and enclosures were named as the top corrosion expense on Navy vessels accounting for $204 million annually in direct costs. To address this issue the feasibility of a coating health monitoring technology that uses electrochemical sensors and stochastic models to quantify the extent and location of coating damage and CP system condition has been demonstrated. The monitoring system is based on ultra-low power low cost smart sensor platform designed for structural health monitoring and equipment diagnostics. A network of sensor nodes for measuring environmental conditions and electrochemical parameters of the coating substrate and cathodic protection system are used for large area tank monitoring. The smart sensor platform supports embedded diagnostic models for direct readings of coating condition and performance of cathodic protection systems without the need for external data processing. The results of laboratory testing of a breadboard prototype system intended for shipboard applications will be presented.
